The Circulatory System

Ladies and Gentlemen,

If you're working on this blog post, you've already finished the digestive system quiz on Edmodo, right?

Great! Let's move on then...

The circulatory system is also called the cardiovascular system. The main jobs of this system are to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your entire body, and to help get rid of waste. We'll share some resources for you here on the blog, and then you'll spend some time reading, learning, thinking, and writing notes in a Google Doc. Finally, you'll post a comment here on the blog. In your comment, please share your new learning (at least three new facts or things you learned) and a couple of questions you have.

Start with this quiz. It's a great idea to take notes, especially on the questions you miss. That's where your new learning will come from!

Here are the resources:

The Body's Highway (Reading Passage from D.E. Science - sign in before you click the link!)
Special Delivery (A second reading passage from Discovery Education)
Kid's Health Website - you can check out all five pages of this!
GCSE Bitesize - a bit more complicated, lots of great diagrams and images!

We can't wait to read your comments! You'll be able to work on this post/comment for a couple of days, so begin your comment in a google doc!

Push your thinking, Dragons! The world is watching.

  1. Dear Mr. Moore,

I learned that blood can travel through the body in one minute. I also learned that the circulatory system can be called the cardiovascular system. Your heart’s size is as big as your fist, if that’s true then my heart is not so big. A question that I have is if us humans didn’t have blood vessels? Another question I have is does the heart pump by its self or does blood help it pump.

  2. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. V,

A new fact is that the circulatory system is connective to the digestive system. Another fact is that blood help carry away some waste and I learn that the septum separates the right of the heart to the left. Also, the right and left ventricles squirts blood all over your body! What are we going to learn next for the circulatory system?

  3. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde, The heart has four cambers. The septum separates the heart to the left to right sides of the heart. The valves in the heart are like doors that let out blood and they also let blood in to the heart.
Why do people use blood to live? Is there any way we could live without a heart and blood? Why do we use the circulatory sytem? Could our blood move though your body without the circulatory sytem?

  4. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,
The first thing I learned is a heart has four chambers. I also learned that the beating sound comes from the valves in your heart closing. The wall that separates the left side and right side of the heart is the Septum. Third of all, I learned was that a esophagus is like a stretchy pipe that's about 10 inches long. I learned that when mashed-up food particles mix with gastric acids. The last thing I learned was that the liver's role is to remove harmful substances from the blood. But, the question I had is why does mixed-up foods mix with gastric acids. I also wondered why an esophagus is so long, because to me your throat is not ten inches long.

  5. Dear Mr Moore,
I learned that if you were to line all of your blood vessels it would go around the more that 2 times. Another thing I learned is that blood vessel are part of your Cardiovascular system. The word Cardio in Cardiovascular means heart and vascular means vessels. The Cardiovascular includes the heart, blood vessels and blood. Also I wonder if what if we didn’t have bones, will our blood move the same way?

  6. Dear Mr.Moore,
Everybody thinks that emotions come from there heart because it speeds up when you get scared or excited, but really your brain it controlling emotions the reason you think its your heart is that your brain is telling your heart to speed up. Your heart is really a muscle. Your heart is about the size of your fist. There is muscle all over your body its in your arms, legs, back, its even in your behind. Your heart is the best muscle because of what it does. What does it do? Well the heart sends blood around your body. What the blood does is bring the body oxygen and nutrients. It also carries waste. Why does the heart beat? How does the heart beat?

  8. I thing that this has been my favorite unit until now and what have learned is that the beating in your heart comes from vales that are closing. The vales open to let blood through. This is important because if they don’t open the blood can’t get through. Another thing that I learned is If you lined up all the blood vessels in your body, they would reach around the world more than twice! My question is why does your body have so many have so many blood vessels.

  9. Dear Mr. Moore, One thing that I learned today is that your blood carries all the nutrients, oxygen, and wastes through your blood vessels. The second thing that I learned is that the sound that you hear when your heart makes the beating sound because it is pumping blood through out your body. The third wonderful thing that I learned was that when your blood
flows through your blood vessels, it is called circulation. One question that I have is, “how does your body know when there is enough blood in certain parts of your body?”

  11. Dear Mr. Moore & Ms. Vandervelde,

I learned that your heart beats 70-100 beats per minute. Also the hearts chambers are called atria, atrium, ventricles, and septum. How your blood keep moving wouldn't the blood stop moving? Also how can blood escape if you can't see the vein like if there's very little skin where a bone is?

  12. Dear,Mr.Moore
I things I learned that the First, wall that separate the hart is called the Septum. Second, thing I learned is 10 capillaries make one hare. Third, is your hart is made up of three blood filled areas. I wonder how big your hart is? One site said your hart is the size of your fist is that true? How many cells die a day?

  13. Dear Mr Moore and Ms V,
I have learned that the sound your heart makes is valves closing. I didn’t know that our heat gives our body oxygen, nutrients, and a way to get rid of waste. I think this is a very hard job for only our heart to do in one day. If we didn’t have our heart we would die, but what if it was possible to live without a heart what organ would take care of what the heart does? The kidneys take all the wast out of our blood. What would happened if we lost our kidneys we wouldn’t be ably to live I know, but what if we could what organ would take over the job of our kidneys?

  14. One new thing I learned is that the heart makes the pumping sound is because valves close and open. Why cant they just stay open and breath? One other thing I learned today is that septum's are like walls that separates the left and the right sides of the heart. Why does there have to be a wall, why can’t there just be a straight path? And also I didn’t know that your heart has just four wholes to transfer blood throughout your body. Can’t there be more holes for every vain? That’s what I learned.
