Monitor and Clarify

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, as you read, you were asked to monitor and clarify. This may be one of the most important reading comprehension strategies!

Sadly, when many of us read, we continue reading when we do not understand. We might not understand a word, a sentence, an idea, or an entire book! If you use the monitor and clarify strategy, it will help you greatly with your comprehension and understanding.

In order to monitor and clarify, you need to make sure you are constantly asking yourself some questions.

1. Do I understand what I'm reading?

2. If not, what will I do about it? Some ideas are to re-read, read ahead, use images and illustrations, or  look at some outside sources such as a dictionary, thesaurus, or reliable website.

3. If I really do understand every single word, sentence, concept, and idea - what do I want to learn more about? How can I push my understanding beyond this text?

In your comment to this post, you need to include as much of the following information as you can:

1. What were you reading? Include the title and author.

2. What didn't you understand? Include the page and paragraph number.

3. What did you do about it?

4. What did you want to learn more about? How did you push your thinking beyond the information  in the text?

5. Where did you find additional information?

6. What did you learn from this text or the additional resources you investigated?

7. Did you enjoy reading this book? Why or why not?

Thanks for pushing your thinking!

  1. Dear Mr.Moore,

I was reading A Deep Blue Lake by Lisa Moore and I had some questions about the meaning of words. One of the words was deter and I found it on page 14. The definition was on Dictionary.com. It meant to stop something from from happening or to prevent. Another word I had trouble with was grandeur. I went to Dictionary.com and it meant amazing or awesome. Those are the only things I had trouble with.

    Sincerely,
    Ian

  3. Dear Mr.Moore,Ms.Vander Velde,Ms.Thumm,

I read a book called "A Deep Blue Lake" by Lisa Moore it's about a volcano that erupted Long ago which this happened in Oregon. The one thing that I didn't understand is why didn't they call it Caldera lake at first I thought what does that mean? Then as I started to think they both sound like crater Then as I read on and found out that that means It is forms from a volcanic erupted several years ago which now forms a caldera. I did enjoy this book I thought that it was very interesting and it gave good information for my post on the blog.

  5. Dear Mr.Moore,
Today I was reading a book called "A Deep Blue Lake" by Lisa Moore. It's about a lake that they once found. One word that I didn't understand was indomitable, It is on page 16 and the paragraph it is on is on the first one. One thing that I did is look in a children's dictionary and I couldn't find any information I also read ahead and I didn't find any information, The last thing I did was to go to www.dictionary.com and I found out that it means that it can not be subdued overcome as persons will or courage unconquerable : an indomitable warrior. I learned more about how they found the lake back in the days and also of how it got its name. I pushed my thinking more in text by being interested in it. I found additional information from the dictionary and the website called Dictionary.com. Something that I learned about in the text was that many people didn't and still don't believe that the tale is true. Yes, I did enjoy reading the book because I learned about how they named it and how they found it.
    Sincerely, Pamela

2)Why does lava look so plump and smooth?
3)Why do people call people valcanoalagsts when they study vocanos?

  9. Dear East Dragon Den,
In shared reading, I'm reading, "Weather and Climate" by Yanitzia Canetti. In this book, I didn't understand how to pronounce some words or what it means like Rafflesia on p.11 of the book and deciduous on p.19. So, I read it out loud quietly in syllables and soon, I was able to pronounce it and for the words I didn't know. I looked up in the glossary or in a dictionary. I would want to learn more about the Tropical climates and I would reread even though I might already know most of the words. Also, I wanted to find more additional info on Polar climates. I was able to learn that in the summer, the South Pole will be lit by the sun til midnight and while the winter, the poles are dark. Anyways, I learned in the book of the different climates and weather all over the globe and what interesting information they had like on p.16, it talked about the climate changing a the Earth rotates. Finally, I did enjoy this book because this book made me learn a lot of things that I never knew. That's my monitor and clarify.

    Sincerely,
    L, Dalena

I didn't get the answer in the book so I wrote it down on a sticky note. I wanted to learn more about how they know they are going to erupt if they were sleeping. I learned that if you live anywhere near the ring of fire that you need to have a close eye on the volcano that is near you. I did enjoy the book because I got to learn about the volcanos.

I am reading A Deep Blue Lake by: Lisa Moore.
One thing I didn't understand was the words ''mar''and ''grandeur''. It is on page 14 in the paragraph. What I did to find the answer was look in a dictionary and look on dictionary.com.One thing I really wanted to learn about was why did crater lake form on top of a volcano that had an enormous eruption.I tried to push my thinking by tiring to figure out what makes water form on a volcano. Well here is what I thought if water is on a volcano that means there either is a season like winter that produce's water or there could be water around the area. I also researched on that and they don't grow on active volcanoes and the water in there usually has acids form the volcano.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crater_lake. I learned that a caldera lake only forms on a non active volcano. I liked the book because it had alot of information that I didn't know.

    Sincerely,Daniela A.

  26. Dear Mr.Moore,

I was reading the book Weather and Climate by Yanitzia Canetti. I was wondering how to say the word rafflesia on page 11 paragraph 2. For this word I found out how to say the word on
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rafflesia?s=t. I know that it is the biggest flower in the world. I want to know how big it is and where can you find it in the world. I learned how to say the word and you say it (ruh-flee-zhuh). Yes, I did enjoy this book because it taught my lots of information about weather. I found out that the world coldest temperature was -128.6 degrees Fahrenheit and it was record July 1983 and many other facts. Like in the summer in the North Pole the sun shines til midnight was in the winter it is always dark in the North Pole. I think that this book was the best of many non-ficton books.
