Constellations

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, you'll have a chance to explore some websites that are focused on constellations. When you finish your exploration, come back to the blog and leave a comment. In your comment, please write a nice big juicy paragraph in which you answer these questions:

1. What is a constellation?
2. What is an asterism?
3. How are history and mythology connected to the constellations?
4. What new facts did you lean?
5. What was your favorite part of this activity? Why?
6. What questions do you have about constellations?
7. What constellations do you think you could identify tonight when you are outside?

As you navigate the websites, take some notes on a google doc - that'll make your comment much easier at the end.

Push your thinking!

  1. Dear Ms. Vander Velde, Mr. Moore and Mr. Ulrich,
A constellation is a group of stars that, when seen from Earth, form a pattern. The stars in the sky are divided into 88 constellations. An asterism is a pattern of stars recognized on Earth's night sky. History and mythology are connected to the constellations because the history part tell when they were found and when they came to be seen. The mythology part is like something that we made up or we are just making it up right know. The facts that I learned were that when your at your home you can look at the stars and see what they can make. Another thing that I learned was that when you see a constellation it is a group of stars that you can see from the earth. A question that I have are how do they form in the space and how do they become a group of stars. Some that I might be able to are the big dipper and the little dipper.

  2. Dear Ms. T, (1) Constellation are images in the sky. To find them you will have to use your imagination because they are made from stars.(4) I learned that constellations are hard to tell how they found a image in some of the stars. I bet they had to have allot of imagination.(6) How can they make mythology from the stars? Do they do it for fun? Or do they do it for something like religion? (7) I bet we could find constellations in the sky to night because there aren't any clouds I can see out of the window. (5) The most fun thing in this activity is the interesting facts I learned (so far). From, Tyler

A constellation is a group of stars that when you see them from earth they are formed in a pattern. The stars in the sky are divided into 88 pieces. An asterism is a pattern of stars in the sky. They are connected to the constellations because they are greek and roman names. I learned that constellations can be a useful way to help identify positions of stars in the sky and that constellations are not real objects; they are just patterns as seen from our observation point on Earth.

  7. A constellation is a group of star that look from earth like a animal or other things. The stars are normal star that from earth look like a pattern. There are 88 constellation. A asterism is a pattern that isn’t a officially constellation or is part of a officially constellation. Mythology is something that is told by people but sometimes isn’t really. I never know that a constellation is made up of patterns. My favorite part of the activity was looking for information. I really didn’t have questions about constellation. I think I could identify the constellation called Leo.

A constellation is a group of stars that forms a pattern. There is a word for a pattern of stars in the sky which appears to be so distinctive that it is easily identifiable and remembered. That word is "asterism". In ancient times, people saw asterisms and made up all kinds of stories about mythological creatures and characters which they associated with the star patterns. The difference between mythology and history is that history was facts or things that are from the past. Mythology is real facts from this kind of year. New facts I learned was that constellations are a group of stars that make a pattern and I didn’t know that. Another new fact was that I didn’t know what was mythology. My favorite part of this activity was the research because I went to lots of different places. When do constellations come out ? Do they come out every night? I probably think that I will see lots of them and maybe I will see a whole group of stars.

  9. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,
A constellation is a imaginary stories that farmers, astronomers think about. Asterism is a pattern of stars recognized on Earth's night sky. Most ancient cultures saw pictures in the stars of the night sky. The earliest known efforts to catalogue the stars date to cuneiform texts and artifacts dating back roughly 6000 years. These remnants, found in the valley of the Euphrates River, suggest that the ancients observing the heavens saw the lion, the bull, and the scorpion in the stars. The constellations as we know them today are undoubtedly very different from those first few--our night sky is a compendium of images from a number of different societies, both ancient and modern. By far, though, we owe the greatest debt to the mythology of the ancient Greeks and Romans. I learn thre are different kinds of patterns of stars that you can see at night time. My favorite part is when I'm reading the names of the stars I'm amazed because i new just some of them. My question is how constellation made or how they form a perfect pattern? I think I can identify a kind of constellation tonight is a big deeper.

Some new facts that I learned was about what kind of constellations there are. Some constellations are, Aquarius,Virgo, the virgin, and Leo, the lion. Another thing I learned was that Hydra, the water snake is the largest constellation. My favorite part of this activity was to research because there was lots of information on the website. Also Mr. Moore narrowed down our search so thank you. A question I have for constellations is, do stars move to make the pattern or are they already in the position? Some constellations I might see tonight are, Ara, the altar or I might see the Dipper.

Another question I had is when did the first constellation got discovered. I could probably identify constellations by trying to look for patterns in the sky.
