Digestive System

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, you'll examine some resources related to the digestive system. Then you'll post a comment in which you explain all about three new things you've learned.

Begin by taking this quiz! After the quiz, you might want to make some notes about questions you missed. They'll come in handy for the blog comment you need to write.

Next, spend some time with the resources.

  1. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,
One thing I learned was that the liver's role is to remove harmful substances from the blood. I also learned that when mashed-up food particles mix with gastric acids. The last thing that I learned was that a esophagus is like a stretchy pipe that's about 10 inches long.

  3. Dear Mr.Moore and Ms.Vander Velde,
Three things that I had learned today from these websites are, when I took the test I had gotten 5 correct answers. When it was over it gave me the answer key. I had guessed on some of them. SO it said that how long was an adults small intestine? Mr.Moore had told us it would be like about 30 feet. So I guessed it was 22 feet because it was the closest to 30. I had gotten an answer wrong because I didn't know what it was. It was that the bile was made up of the liver. I had guessed that the large intestine was 5 feet because it is wider but smaller than the small intestine. That's what I had learned.

  4. Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,

1.7 liters of saliva is produced each day.
The esophagus is approximately 25cm long.
Every day 11.5 liters of digested food, liquids and digestive juices flow through the digestive system, but only 100mls is lost in faces
An adults stomach can hold approximately 1.5 liters of material. The link is http://library.thinkquest.org/J0112205/interesting_facts.htm

  5. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. V,

Today I learn that the gallbladder store bile from your liver. Bile is a chemical energy so we can use bile for food. Also, I learn that gastric juices from your stomach break down food other than your saliva. Lastly, I learn a scientific name for mash up food which is bolus.

  6. Dear Mr. Moore,
The digestive system starts before you even eat anything, if you think about pizza or eating your mouth starts making saliva. I also learned that not all your organs are part of your digestive system. Your bladder and lungs are not part of the digestive system. Are food has to become small chemicals before they are absorbed.

  7. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,
One thing I have learned is that an adult's small intestine is about like 22 feet long and that the large intestine is only about 5 feet long. The last thing I learned was that when food reaches the stomach mashed up food particles are mixed with gastric juices.

  8. Dear Mrs.V,
Today I learned three things one is a adult’s Large intestine is about 5 feet.2. When the food comes to the stomach has this juice called Gastric juice and 3. The organs that takes the nutrients is the Pancreas, liver, and gall bladder.

The three new things I learned useing the sites you gave me are the bile is made in the liver. Another fact I learned is the organs that help with absorption are Pancreas, Liver, and Gall Bladder. The last fact is the large intestine is about 5 feet long.

  15. The three new things that I learned. That a small intestine is about 30ft
long when you are an adult and that weird stuff are happening all day in your stomach. The last thing that I learned that is new is that the digestive system can go on for more than hours.

A few things I learned from the links on the post are...
1.) The mashed up mixture of food when we chew is called bolus.
2.) Gastric juice is the enzyme is our stomach.
3.) lipases are an enzyme and digest fat.

The following are the 3 things that I learned today. You digestive system starts working before you take your first bite of food like the food left over that is still waiting to be expelled. I also learned that your large intestines absorb water. lastly I learned that your body would not function well if you didn't let food get expelled from your body.

Three things I learned today is that the liver is the biggest organ. The second thing I learned is that liver helps by storing energy and helping the body get red of poison in body. The last thing I learned is that the liver makes bile.

  25. I learned that the food moves by us in to little tubs so the food has the food can skwees threw the to tubs.I also learned that when the food is done with the tubs it goes down to the liver.I have also learned that the chemical digestion brakes down the food so it is easier to swallow down the food and also so it is easier for it to pass down the tubs.

One thing I learned is that the function of the blood is that it transport oxygen and nutrients everywhere they are needed and another thing that the blood function does is it shuttles the wast products produce by cells to places and that the blood vessels tubes that transport blood throughout the body. and one more thing is that circulatory system the system of organs that pump blood throughout the body.

Dear Mr.Moore and Ms.Vander Velde,The following is what I learned from the sites you posted on Eastdragonden. But today I learned that physical digestion is when are food gets to the stomach i keeps on getting tossed around so it breaks down.Another thing i learned is Bile is made up of liver and moves out bad particles and sucks up the good ones. The last thing I learned is Chemical digestion what it does is first it has to be helped with enzymes then when it is digested, molecules are small enough to pass in the large intestine.

  30. Dear Mr. Moore and Mrs. Vander Velde, One new thing I learned was that the small intestine for adult size is 22 feet wide. I thought that the large intestine in bigger and the small intestine is smaller but, I guessed wrong. Other new thing I learned is that we have this air tube connective to our esophagus and that's where you breath. I thought that we just breath to though our nose and the air will just go down to the luges all by it's self. The last new thing I learned that the food we eat stays 2-6 hours in your body! I thought it just goes strait down. Where does it stay and why does is stay there for 2-6 hours?

  31. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,
From the resources on the blog, I learned that mashed-up food particles mix with gastric juices when the food reaches the stomach. I also learned that the pancreas, liver, and gall bladder help with the absortion of nutrients in your body. Another thing I learned was that food can spend up to four hours in your small intestine. Also, I learned that bile is made in the liver. The final thing I learned today is that the large intestine is about five feet long.

Here are 4 new things I learned from the links we got to explore. First,
I learned that the large intestine is only 5ft long. Next, I learned that Bile is made in the liver. I thought it was made in the gall bladder. Then, I learned that your esophagus is about 10 inches long. Lastly, I learned that the small intestine is about 1½ inches to 2 inches around.

  33. Dear Ms. VanderVelde and Mr. Moore,
The three things that I learned from these resources are that when you think, look, or even smell food the digestion starts. The things or substances that our body needs cannot be absorbed into the blood until they have been broken down into small chemicals. The last thing that I learn from the resources is that the food that you eat comes down the esophagus and then when it finally gets to the gut the gut almost is like it is squeezing the food while it goes down and finally comes out the things that are not needed or out of the rectum.

  34. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,
First thing I learned today is that Pancreas, liver, and gall bladder all help the body to absorb nutrients. Because I thought when the food comes from the small intestine that's the time it can absorb. Next, is that bile is made out of liver, because liver is the bile factory. Last one is that when food reach the stomach it mashed the food particles mix with gastric juice.

  38. Dear Ms.Vander Velde and Mr.Moore,
The fallowing three thing are the new things I learned today.
One thing I learned was about Physical Digestion. I learned that we have some lumps like materiel and it helps us chew our food from smaller to even smaller and so on until you can swallow it and that's called Physical Digestion.
Another thing I learned was Chemical Digestion. That means that the substance which our body cannot absorb blood until it brakes down into small pieces called chemicals. It also gets help by enzymes, When all the food is digested in can now go through the small intestine walls. The last thing I learned was that it takes almost 4-5 hours for all our digestion to finish.
