Mr. Moore: Writer's Workshop 1/13/12

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, I'd like to you to do the following:

1. Create a new Google Document.
    Name it: Prompt Thinking.
Share it: Mr. Moore (can comment, no email)

2. Begin to edit the document by answering as many of the following questions as you can - using big, fat, juicy paragraphs with explanations and examples of your thinking.

A. When you write to a prompt, what are the strategies you use to score at the highest levels?
B. Explain the skills your writing should demonstrate to score a "4" or advanced in each area of the rubric.
C. How can the rubric help you as a writer?
D. What are the skills you feel confident in using from the rubric?
E. What are the skills you don't understand from the rubric?
F.  If you had to make a checklist of things to remember when you respond to a prompt, what would you include?
G. If you were teaching students to respond to a prompt, what would you say are the most important things to teach them?

Thanks in advance for pushing your thinking! This assignment is due today. Do not waste your time. I'll be checking it from home tonight. :)

  1. Dear Mr. Moore,
This is what I got done...
(c-) This rubric can help me as a writer by showing me what teacher wants us to focus on in our writing and how to reach proficient or advanced on our writing. For example for spelling we would want to spell most of the common words correctly to aim for a three (proficient) or spell all of the common words and most of the hard words to reach a four (advanced).
    (f) If I had to make a checklist of things to remember when I respond to a prompt I would defiantly make a check box for spelling and to check if my writing makes sense. I would also include to remember to have a narrowed topic so I will not run out of time to finish the prompt.
    (e) The skills I don't understand from the rubric are “format fits the purpose and audience and enhances the flow of writing.” In this I didn’t understand the word enhances. I looked it up here. It means to raise to a higher degree. I also didn’t under stand, “frequent spelling errors impede understanding.” I did not understand impede. I looked it up here. It means to get in the way of.
    From,
    Tyler
