Elena: Connecting and Comparing

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today you finished reading the selection titled Elena, by Diane Stanley. When you finished reading, you were asked to consider the selection questions on page 564.

Now that you've had a few minutes to think with your team, please answer question seven as a comment to this post. It's a good idea to use Google Docs to draft your response.

7. All the main characters in our theme, One Land, Many Trails, demonstrate courage and determination. Compare Elena's main character with one of the following: Slow, Grace McCance, or Bob Lemmons. Remember: Compare = find similar things, contrast = find differences.

Thanks for your hard work Dragons!

  1. Elena is really similarly to Bob Lemons because both of them have courage to do what they did. Elena had the courage to took care of her family when her husband died, and Bob Lemons had the courage to go into a group of mustangs knowing that the leader mustang could kill him or injury him. Elena is different from Bob Lemons because she was trying to help her family and protect her family from any danger. Bob Lemons was trying to get more mustangs for himself.

Elena’s courage was like that of Slow because he wanted to change his name to a better one. Elena was sort of like because she had just wanted to make things right for her family.

  5. Elena is compared to Bob Lemons because she was trying to leave Mexico and go to California. And Bob was trying to find the herd and become one of them. So they both were trying to reach their goal.

  6. Dear Mr.Moore,
I am comparing Elena with Bob Lemmons. What I compare is that Elena and Bob Lemmons both were back in the history and they were both trying to reach a goal. Bob Lemons had a goal to find the herd. Elena was trying to leave Mexico to California. I have a connection with this because my mom was trying to find a good place to get a job so she moved from Mexico to Colorado!

  7. Dear Mr. Moore,

I'll be comparing and contrasting Elena and A Boy Called Slow. The two have different problems like Slow need to gain reputation and Elena need to cross the border to safety. Though the two character are eager/determine to destroy a camp(Slow), or get across the border with a brother that is as tall as a man(Elena).

  9. Comparing Determination Bob Lemmons, Elena they both were determined to accomplish something. Contrast Determination Bob Lemmons, Elena didn’t both chase horses to sell.
They were not both slaves Bob Lemmons was a slave but not anybody in Elena. Bob Lemmons the characters in Elena they didn’t have the same actions Bob Lemmons got horses and sold them and in Elena it has wars and tragedies all round in Mexico. In Elena it had Pancho Villa but not in the story with Bob Lemmons.

  10. Dear Mr. Moore,
Elena’s main character, Rosa, is similar to Grace McCane because they both had to move from their home to go to a different country.

  11. Dear Mr Moore,
Elena’s adventure was similar because they were both in the outdoors, Elena was out in Mexico on the countryside, and Bob Lemmons was out on the plains with horses. Elena and Bob Lemmons bot faced danger, Elena faced Pancho Villa and Bob faced a herd of mustangs. A different thing about Elena’s adventure compared Bob’s is that Bob was trying to be a part of a herd and Elena’s family was trying to get away from the war.

  12. Dear Mr. Moore

Pioneer Girl and Elena are the same by because they both lived in a prairie and both of the moms had to work really hard to keep a good house and they both had friends that were their neighbors. Both stories are similar because they had people out for weeks or days or even months.

  13. Grace and Elena are the same because they are working hard to complete something in his life. I think that because on page 513, the text said, “Because they knew no other life, they did not feel deprived. I think Gracie felt like she has slow success during her lifetime. For Elena she had a hard lifetime avoiding problems in her lifetime. I say that because on page 561, the text said, “You work too hard, Mamacita.” I think that means that her mom worked really hard for them.

  15. Grace and Elene where the same because they both moved to somewhere that was new to them, they didn’t know that much about the new land. When the the two settled life was hard and there were many struggles with food and shelter. Grace and Elene were also different, Grace had made and lost their home but Elene had to move out of her home.

  17. Elena had bravery to take her chances of leaving her home and traveling as a widow around to different places with her child like San Francisco and not finding what they came there for compared to black cowboy he had courage to be able to be in a horse fight and almost get majorly hurt by some wild horses.
