Welcome to 5th Grade!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the 5th grade! Today we would like to share the East Dragon Den Blog with you. In order to do that, we've created this post for you to comment on. In your comment, we would like you to consider the following questions:

1. How would you describe yourself as a reader?
2. What do you love to read?
3. Do you have a favorite book?
4. What is the best thing that someone else has ever read to you?
5. What is the first book you ever read?
6. What did you read over the summer?
7. What is your favorite comic book?
8. Do you like to read books, or do you prefer reading on a screen (like a computer, ipad, netbook, etc.)?
9. What are your goals as a reader?
10. What are you good at as a reader?
11. What would like to get better at as a reader?
12. What do you see your family members read?

You do not have to answer all of these questions. You should use them as a guide. Your comment should be a nice, big, fat, juicy paragraph all about you as a reader. Your comment will not be published unless you demonstrate your very best writing ability.

  1. Dear Mr.Moore and Ms. V,

I don't really enjoy reading but, if it was shared reading in school or math were I had to read something I would try to read as good and perfect as I can. But just because i'm a pretty good reader doesn't mean I'm as good and fluent as the other people in advance reading. There is a couple people that are better the me in advanced reading
but, I'm still not as good as my brothers and sister that already went through fifth grade.

  2. Dear Mr.Moore & Ms.V,

I find novels very interesting. I like to read "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "A Dogs Journey".I read both of the series over the summer. I am still reading "A Dog's Journey". I can't say that I haven't seen my family read a book but I don't pay attention to the tittles. I don't know if I'm a good writer or a bad one. I hope they come out with another "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" or "A Dog's Journey". "A Dog"s Journey" is 333 pages long if you didn't know. I think that if you can read "A Dogs Journey" then you are a good reader.
"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" has 217 pages, but "A Dog's Journey" has 333 pages as I said in the last paragraph. So "A Dog's Journey" is a bigger book than "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". I think that "A Dog's Journey" is about 4 centimeters thick and "Dairy of a Wimpy Kid is about half that ( 2 centimeters thick ) . Anyway I think that those books can be used with dominoes. The books could make a staircase because there so thick.

    Hope this was enough,
    Zachary Hart :]

  13. Dear Miss.V and Mr.Moore,

I think that mystery story's but it has to be a ghost story or a story where some one died and some one else has to solve who did the crime. I also like action story's like a battle of the civil war or monsters are on the earth attacking every one. I think that my favorite book was "Goosebumps The Werewolf of Swamp fever. Something that someone read to me was the "Westing Game " at first though I thought it was a boring book but I ended up liking it. I honestly don't remember what was the first book I ever read. This summer I read the book "Ghost stories" about a girl who can find and see ghost. My favorite comic book is the "Cow Wonder" where a cow tries to save the world from disgusting Hamburgers. I do not like to read on any electronics except tv and computers. My goal as a reader is to become the very best I can the fastest and highest level reader that I can become. I am probably good with words and knowing how to spell them. I would like to get better at how fast I can read. I usually see my brother reading. He reads things like black hawk down and basic training. He would like to become a pare rescue man.

going on the internet and doing other school things. As a reader, I like 2 types of books mostly. I like mysteries and since. One of my favorite books are "Box Car Children". I go on my laptop,I Pod or the net books that I have at school to read books sometimes other than just going to find a book that I want to read. I can go on one of those. I have some goals that I have with reading. But, one of then is to be more fluent with my reading. When I read I'm not fluent.
I am not that clear. I see a lot of books that my family reads. My dad reads Springkston King books. My mom just reads a lot of random books. Brother reads cor books and my sister whatever is easy. That is mostly everything that is me as a reader. Thank you for reading!

I describe myself as an active reader. Meaning I love to read all the time. I love to read Jules Verns long long juicy books. Especially "The Mysterious Island". If someone asks me if I have a favorite book, I`ll usually say no because when I am reading a book I`m glued to it, and I`ll say that`s my favorite right there but then I say that about the next and the next. So I`m basicly right and wrong about every book.Thank you for reading my comment.Bye!

  58. Hi East Dragon Den students and teacher,

This is Mr. Rodriguez. I am a 5th grade teacher in Los Angeles California. BTW, You guys have an awesome blog. This past Saturday I was going to have a very long day. I needed to commute into the city for a teacher conference. This means I had a two hour bus ride there and two hour bus ride back. As I contemplated, what should I read. I decided to challenge myself. There is a short book my wife bought this Summer. It is called "Manuscript Found in Accra" by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. I decided to read the whole book! I figured at about 190 pages I could do it. It was a wonderful experience. I was able to go into my book and live through the voice of the author. This book is written in fictional narrative stye. As a short summary it is about a city, Jerusalem about 1,000 years ago when it is about to be invaded. The townspeople gather together to listen to a leader called the Copt. They ask him for advice and what to expect in their future. I recommend this book for the older youth and adults. There are parts that teachers can share with their 5th grade students. Especially the part of asking for advice and realizing that we are already doing what we are supposed to be doing. That we share experiences with others doesn't matter where you are. Best of luck with the new school year!
