Healthy Lunch: Key Time Nonfiction

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The article you'll need to complete your job today is located right here. Instead of making your own blog post, please comment on this post instead. You won't be able to do headings and other text features, but you should still have three solid paragraphs - each with a quote from the article as well as your own thinking.

After you finish, please reply to at least three other students and their thinking.

~ Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde

  1. Hi Mr. Moore and Ms. V, I have read the article and here is my summary.

There are rules for the amount of food given and for each meal there needs to be a least one vegetable. The kids will take the vegetables, but then throw it out and get some thing else that is not as healthy such as Hot Cheetos or Pop Tarts. The article says, "... under federal school meal rules, Jackson and other students must take three things - including one fruit or vegetable - even if they don't want them. Otherwise the federal government won't pay back school districts for the meals." I don't know which side I should take because I understand that the rules are supposed to be for the students' own good, but I also know that school lunch can be very gross tasting.

To add on to that, the students are throwing away the healthy stuff and getting the junk food. The article says, "A study discovered that 40 percent of all the lunches served in four Boston schools are thrown out. In the LA Unified District many students don't want to eat fruits or vegetables, according to McCarthy, who co-wrote the study." Like I said before, I do want a healthy lunch, but I know it tastes gross.

If it tastes good, it's good food, to the students anyway. In the article it said, "'If the food was good food, we'd have no problems' said senior A'lea Rendey, who pulled a hair from her turkey burger. Then she dumped her food and headed off to the school store for a Pop Tart." I think that students shouldn't be picky about their food. they are able to get food and they should be grateful for that. there are many other people who don’t get food.

    1. I agree with you 100%. I think that the last paragraph (and the others but especially the last) had really good thinking. I agree that the kids should be grateful that the lunch ladies take their time to make them a meal.

  2. In the article I read that some kids are throwing away their food because it might not be good they find some gross stuff in it.

    Rules on Calories, Portions

In schools there making kids get three items like some fruits even vegetables even if we don't want it for lunch. They force kids to eat. The people who make the food and serve it they care about the money. If kids do get fruits or vegetables the cooks and servers do not get paid by the government. I think that kids should not get forced to get a lot of food that will just be bad if they can not eat that much if their parents told them not to.

    Tale and Toss

“The extra food costs school districts $5.4 million a day. But about $3.8 million of that is being tossed in the trash, according to national estimates.” In Boston there are four schools that say that 40 percent of lunches being served are getting thrown to the trash. Among other things, some group wants to remove the requirement forcing students to take a fruit or vegetable. I think that people should stop making kids get fruit and vegetables because If you keep on telling the kids they're just going to throw it away, some kids might be thinking that cooks put something in it.

    Calling Celebrity Chefs

At LA Unified, celebrity chefs, such as Jamie Oliver, have helped develop menus for some schools to see whats for lunch. More than 270 schools offer “harvest of the month” lessons about produce, and about 450 schools have started campus gardens so they can grow vegetables. At Washington Prep, a few students said they ate their entire lunches. Daniel Ofa, a sophomore, said he doesn't really enjoy the spaghetti or enchiladas but downs them anyway. “If the food was good food, we’d have no problems,” said senior A’lea Rendey, who pulled a hair from her turkey burger. She then dumped her food and headed off to the school store for a Pop-Tart.”I think that the people who make the lunches and serve them should where some hair nets because that is just gross finding hair in your food. Even I think we should get what we want for lunch or they should make some way better food so we won't throw it away, instead they keep on serving the same each month.

  3. Dear readers,
I finished the text "Dumping the veggies and getting some Pop-Tarts" then wrote this:

My first idea there is more food than high school needs?“ The district is the nation’s second-largest school system and serves 650,000 meals a day. Students throw out at least $100,000 worth of food a day — and probably far more, according to David Binkle, the district’s food services director. “ the text say.my thinking was I think students are wasting a lot of food. The text says “$100,000 worth of food a day” and most is thrown away.

The second idea is nutrition still matters.“‘What can we do about this?’ Brinkel says, ‘We can stop forcing children to take food they don’t like and throw in the garbage.’Many nutrition and health experts disagree. They point to studies that show that kids who are repeatedly served fruits and vegetables will eventually eat more of them. That, in turn, will help keep kids from becoming overweight, says William J. McCarthy. He is a UCLA professor of health policy and management.“ I agree with “many nutrition and health experts”. Students need fruit as well as grain and vegetables. A well balanced meal has vegetable(s), fruit(s), a meat, dairy, and a grain. I eat at least one well balanced meal a day. Kids should eat well balanced meals.

The last idea was calling a garden and chefs. “She co-wrote a study that found that students in Boston ate more fruits and vegetables after the new rules took effect — although they still threw away much of them. The solution to waste, Cohen and others say, isn't to end the rules but to find other ways to get children to eat their veggies. This includes working with professional chefs to make meals tastier, planting school gardens and scheduling recess before lunch. It is good they’re eating fruits but the trash problem needs solving. Its fun to have a school garden.

  4. Forcing People to Eat
People (adults mostly) force people (kids) to get stuff they don’t want like a vegetable. The adults mostly give kids the fruit or vegetable because they say that it's good for you. It is good for you, but people just don't like it. Kids need to eat vegetables and fruit to get stronger. (“Among other things, the group wants to remove the requirement forcing students to take a fruit or vegetable.”)
    Food Troubles
Everyone gets food, but the only thing is that food sometimes gets in the way of candy or vegetables. People always find food on the floor and people just like eating candy or some kind of other junk food that is not good for your health. Food is important to others because if you don't eat food you will just be hungry and die for starving. You will die if you don’t eat food within in one month or less than a month. (“She said the rules have helped children eat healthier food. That's particularly important for inner-city, low-income students who get up to half their daily calories from school meals. She co-wrote a study that found that students in Boston ate more fruits and vegetables after the new rules took effect — although they still threw away much of them.”)
    Foods That Have Disgusting Stuff
People have many problems with trash foods like foods that have hair or some kind of disgusting thing on your food. Adults also have problems that kids throw the vegetables and fruits in the trash and then they just go straight to eat a kind of candy which is bad. Also people (mostly boys) at school eat the delicious candy first and then they eat the rest of the healthy food (maybe also junk food). (“If the food was good food, we’d have no problems,” said senior A’lea Rendey, who pulled a hair from her turkey burger. She then dumped her food and headed off to the school store for a Pop-Tart.)

  5. Dear Readers,
I read an article called, " Dumping the veggies and grabbing some pop-tarts." The author has three main point. The three main point are that, students don't want school lunch, the LA unified cafeterias are wasting to much money, and some students prefer to eat unhealthy lunch. Through out this article you will learn about what is going on in school, and why kids don't want school lunch.
To start off, like I said students don't want school lunch. Details to support that students don't want school lunch are these, it says in the article, " students are bringing in junk food because they don't like the food served." My personal thinking is that sometimes my school lunch is not that really good but I at least try to give it a try.
You may ask why the LA unified cafeterias are wasting a lot of money. It is because many students are throwing away their food. Read this, " students throw out at least $100,000 worth of food a day- and probably far more according to David Binkle, The distric's food services director. My personal thinking is why buy more food if students are going to waste it?
To conclude, details to support that students are choosing unhealthy food are these, " ... she then dumped her food and headed of to the school store for a pop-tart." My personal thinking is That I wouldn't throw my food out, I would at least try to eat the fruits.

  6. I have been recently reading the article "Dumping the Veggies and Grabbing Some Pop-Tarts". Kids aren't eating their lunch. They are just throwing it away. "Half-eaten lunches remain on cafeteria tables..." I think that the teachers shouldn't force them to take what they don't want.
When you throw food away it could cost a lot of money. "Nationally, the cost of wasted food may be more than $1 billion each year." When that much money is being wasted, I think that everyone should have to eat all of their food.
They want to bring in professional chefs so that they can make the food taste better. "This includes working with professional chefs to make meals tastier, planting school gardens and scheduling recess before lunch." I think if recess is scheduled before recess it will make the kids hungrier so that they eat most of their meal.

  7. What I learned from Dumping the veggies and grabbing some pop-tarts is this:

    Eat Junk Food

From what I learned it shows that most of the students are not eating school food and veggies and throw it away then they go to the school store to get hot Cheetos and Doritos that's not good for you but some people do it.I quoted this “It's lunchtime. But high school junior Parrish Jackson has barely touched her turkey burger and apricots.
She’s dumping them into the trash can.The apricots are “sour,” says the 16-year-old at Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles. The meat is “nasty.” If it were up to her, she would just have taken the potato wedges and headed to the student store to fuel up on hot Cheetos and juice.”What I think is that the schools are trying too much so that students eat there food I think they should try less they should just let the kids bring their own lunch or buy junk food from the school store it’s their problem.

    What they are wasting

I just went back to the article and I quoted two thing and it is this: “The extra food costs school districts $5.4 million a day. But about $3.8 million of that is being tossed in the trash, according to national estimates.” and “Nationally, the cost of wasted food may be more than $1 billion each year. A federal survey found that 48 states say food waste and higher costs are their top challenges.” Imagine how much they are wasting for one school that's a lot to pay.And you're paying that food for the students but they are throwing it away.

What would you do waste money for people that don't thank you or save money and don't buy food and let the students buy their own food and let life keep on going with junk food that’s something to think about?

What would you do if you were in this situation?

  9. Mr. Moore and Mrs. Vander Velde,
When I read the text that you told us to read I found that there were three main ideas. The main ideas I had found that the high school kids are not eating a healthy lunch, why the students should eat a healthy lunch, and kids are wasteful people.
I think that the high school kids are not eating a healthy lunch is one of the main ideas because in the text I found that it said something that went like "it is lunch time and that a girl in high school barely turkey burger and apricots. She’s them in the trash can." When I read this I thought man this girl doesn't like meat and fruits (apricots are fruits).
I also think that why students should eat the a healthy lunch because I found in the text it said "William J. McCarthy, said healthy foods will help keep kids from becoming overweight," McCarthy also said "extra cost is worth it, get kids to eat healthy, food lengthen lives and prevent health problems." For the truth I didn't think this was true, but then I found that the text said "William J. McCarthy is a UCLA professor of health policy and management." this is why now I believe this guy.
I also think, in this article, that the third main idea is that some kids are wasteful people because this article said "extra food costs school districts $5.4 million a day. About $3.8 million is being tossed in the trash accoring to national estimates." I do believe this because see everyday at lunch that kids will toss away most of there food and they won't even touch the food at all. I think that most of the kids in school are some what wasteful, and I wish they would just take what they can eat.
This is what I think are the main ideas, but other people might say other wise. This is just a recap the main ideas that I think are in here are high school kids are not eating a healthy lunch, why the students should eat a healthy lunch, and kids are wasteful people. These people so just be greatful for the food they can eat, some people starve to death or even starve there whole lives.

  10. I have recently read the article called "Dumping the veggies and grading some pop-tarts". In this article it talks about kids throwing all of their lunch away and buying other food. Even kids that have home lunch throw it away and buy something else. People should eat their own lunch because if they throw their lunch away and buy something that's pretty much like wasting money. Some people barley bite their lunch and then throw it in the trash. I call that wasting food. The next thing I read is about not being healthy. What it said was that kids don't want to eat their vegetables and instead get junk food from the school store or other stores and when they eat junk food they may not eat their vegetables again. Some people might still eat their vegetables but maybe the rest won't

    1. "If there was a piece of hair on my food I wouldn't stop eating". The last thing I read in the article was wasting money. A girl had some school lunch and she saw a piece of hair on her turkey burger. So, she threw it in the trash and and went to the school store. I would have still eaten my lunch.

  11. Students don't like their school lunch

The reason students don’t like their lunch is because it is unhealthy. Students would rather through ALL their lunch away then eat what they have. That makes it harder for the students to not pay attention very much without any food in their system. “But high school junior Parrish Jackson has barely touched her turkey burger and apricots. She’s dumping them into the trash can.The apricots are “sour,” says the 16-year-old...”.
    School lunches are not healthy
Most lunches served at school are bad and unhealthy for some students. That is why most students throw their lunch away before they even touch a piece of food hey have. Schools shouldn’t have unhealthy meals because students will just throw theme away whichs will make it hard for a student to focus without a well balanced meal. “...students in Boston ate more fruits and vegetables after the new rules took effect — although they still threw away much of them...”
Students are taking their own lunch
Now students want to take their own lunch to school because the lunch at school is unhealthy and nasty for theme.Students would rather pack their own lunch and pack unhealthy things. For example they would rather pack a pop-tart than some carrots.”Students in Boston ate more fruits and vegetables after the new rules took effect.”

  12. Ladies and Gentlemen
I have recently read the article titled, Dumping the Veggies and Grabbing a Pop Tart. The article was mostly about are Most of the food is getting thrown out, Schools are losing money by getting all of the food thrown out, Harvest Of the month.
In the article it said “...second-largest school system and serves 650,000 meals a day. Students throw out at least $100,000 worth of food a day — and probably far more” Also it said, That comes to $18 million a year — based on the estimate that 10 percent of the food is wasted.” Man with all of that money I maybe possible to get 6 times that because usually if somebodies get rich they get richer and richer and richer. WIth all of that money being thrown out we could have much more high quality food.
It also said in the article for example “The extra food costs school districts $5.4 million a day. But about $3.8 million of that is being tossed in the trash, according to national estimates. “ Now we could seriously use all of that money for better food than so let's not waste it.
One thing that the in article that I thought was important was “At LA Unified, celebrity chefs, such as Jamie Oliver, have helped develop menus. More than 270 schools offer “harvest of the month” lessons about produce, and about 450 schools have started campus gardens.” The reason why I thought that this was important is because if you start your own garden it may save money. But if we keep throwing all of that food out then we can’t really do anything like what I am trying to say is that we are throwing out food that we grow. When we grow it and get rid of it we are just losing money again and it grow fast enough. In other words we are trying to throw away food faster than we can grow it.
So those are all of the things that the article is about. Now why don’t you make a major difference by eating your veggies on your plate.

  14. Dear Readers, I finished reading a article titled "Dumping the Veggies and grabbing some pop-tarts.
First of all, First of all, “The apricots are sour”, says a 16-year-old. “Students throw out at least 100,000 worth of food a day, probably far more, according to David Binkle, the districts services director”. I think that high school students don’t like school lunch because to them is not good and to other students from the high school they like it. Also that maybe students don’t see how much food is wasted.
Another example is, “... $18 million a year- based on the estimate that 10 percent of the food is wasted, Binkle says”. Another quote is, “A study discovered that 40 percent of all lunches served in Boston schools are thrown out”. “ 48 states say food waste and higher costs are their top challenges”. I think sometimes students grab something that they don’t want and throw it away. Also that if students don’t like school lunch then, they should bring lunch from home.
Different main point is, “A study discovered that 40 percent of all the lunches served in four Boston schools are thrown out” “... “about $3.8 million of that is being tossed in the trash, according to national estimates”.I think kids from different schools that think school lunch is not good for you because the students think school lunch is nasty to them.
