Hiaasen Author Study

Ladies and Gentlemen,

If you've had all of your work approved (including at least three comments on the work of other students) then you are ready for this post.

As a comment to this post, please answer the following questions using evidence from the text to support your thinking.

As you read further in your book, what evidence can you find to support the fact that the main character is changing?

How are they learning or growing as a person?

How are they changing their mind?

Are they finding new solutions to their problems?

Are they saying  or thinking different kinds of things?

Enjoy!

~ Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde

  1. I still think that Noah's father is the main character because he used to be this guy that didn't want to get out of jail, because of what he did to the Coral Queen. I think the father changed because of when he started caring more for his children and his wife. It says that Noah's father took off him ankle braclete to keep him from leaving the house. "Paine, you're under house arrest. Remember?" That sort of explains why Noah's father wanted to take him ankle braclete off to find Abbey. I think that Noah's father has found something he really cares about because wanted his children to stay safe. He might be growing as a safe person for his children. Noah's father might changing his mind about leaving or even trying to do something bad to get back in jail. After he heard that his own wife might have wanted to get divoced with him, that changed him so much inside. I think that he is finding ways to make things better between him and his whole family that could have left him when he was in jail. I think that he is thinking different since he was in jail, but I wonder what he would do later on if someone would hurt his family. The book said that mom and dad were to happy to see Abbey that they were on mad at her at that time. Abbey made a tape that proves that the Coral Queen was doing something wrong. "But I can still see what they're doing -----can't you?" In that text it does say that they were realesing this liquid in the water. But I think that Noah's father thinks that the Coral Queen people want to hurt people that will rat them out to the police about what they are doing.

    1. I disagree with you on the main character I think that Noah is the main character I know that Noah's dad sank the coral queen but Noah saved it.

  2. The main character is changing by that Noah is doing crazy things like putting food coloring in the toilet in the Coral Queen. It says here in the book that he dumped it in the toilet of the Coral Queen "Carefully I squeezed the plastic container until every gooey purple drop landed in the toilet hole." Noah is learning sometimes not to go to a gambling boat when there is no kids allowed in there because there was a woman trying to open the toilet door where Noah is. It said here in the book "You open up right this second the old woman squawked I gotta go now!" In the book Flush right now Noah isn't really thinking of changing his mind to help his dad when Dusty Muleman is dumping toilet water in the ocean. That is because Noah went on the Coral Queen to put the food coloring in the toilets. It says here how he got in "The crate was dark and musty inside" Noah has went inside the crate and then the men put the crate with Noah inside in the Coral queen. There is a quote that says so "Luno lifted one end of my crate while his companion grabbed the other" and that is how Noah got in the Coral Queen. Noah did find a solution to his problem and that is to buy food coloring so the waste in the toilet in the Coral Queen shows to other people. The quote that says it is here "Even better it was highly concentrated which meant that a small amount would dye a lot of poopy water." Noah is thinking different kinds of things because I don't think that a lot of people would buy food coloring to put in the toilet in a casino boat. It says here "We'd decided to use food-coloring gel instead of laundry dye because the gel wasn't made with chemicals that would harm the sea life."

  4. In the book " Scat" Nick is the main character. He is changing through out the book. First he was afraid of Mrs. Scratch and he does not want to stay in her class. One times "Nick and the other students had been blown away. What kind of teacher would punish a kid for puking?" on page 2 But now Nick and his teacher Mrs. Starch are good friends and they solved a problem together. He totally changed his mind about his teacher now they know each other very well "Bunny Starch and three of her students had saved the life of a rare panther cub . . ." on page 350. I think that Nick learned that his dad is important and he wants to spend more time with his family. "He came home without telling his doctors . . ." on page 295. " Your dad wanted to be here more than anything. He was sure he'd get better faster if he was home with you and me." on page 296. Nick first thought that Smoke was weird and a bad child but it turned out that he was a good person he totally changed. " Without his keen tracking skills, the missing mother panther might not have been found. . ." on page 351. Mrs. Starch, Nick, Smoke, Marta, and Twilly were the ones who solved the mystery and found a solution for the problem. The problem was that Mrs. Scratch got lost but she really didn't she had found a cub and her students helped her to find the panther cub's mother.

    1. I disagree with you on the man character being Nick I think that Marta is the main character they are both really important. I also think that Nick is not that afraid of Ms. Starch because he raised his hand for Marta on page 4. I know that Nick is still scared of Ms.Starch but I think that they talk more about Marta than they do Nick and how afraid she is. They talk about when she thrown up on page 2 and also when she said going on to the Black Vine Swamp she said "If she calls on me, I swear to god , i'll fake a heart attack." she said on page 30. I think that they talk more about Marta so that is why I disagree with you about the main character. Other than that I really like your thinking. I am not far in the book but I really like your thinking.

  5. One thing that I have found in the book "Scat" by Carl Haissan that supports the idea that Nick is changing is that he was brave enough to sneak into Ms. Starch's house. I think that he has been growing as a person, and I think this because his dad came home without his right arm. "...and he realized, 'my dad is an amputee.' " So Nick taped his right arm against his back to honor his dad. He has also started changing his mind about Ms. Starch. "Maybe she isn't so bad" They haven't found any solutions to their problems yet, but I think that in the next two or three chapters, they will find a solution to one of their problems. We are close to being halfway through the book, I think, so the solutions usually comes out around the middle of the book, but there is still stuff to do, which makes up the other half of the book. I don't think that Nick is saying or thinking anything new except that he changed his mind bout Ms. Starch.

  6. Dear Ms. V I have been reading the book,"Scat " and in the beginning I predicted that the main character was Duane. Duane is a student at the Truman school. Duane is not at all a great student. Duane has a record of setting fires. Recently in the book there was a campfire when the Truman students went on a field trip. I also think that Duane is the main character because of the problems he causes. Just before the campfire was set and the students went on a field trip Duane got into an argument with his biology teacher and threw her a threat which then she was missing after the campfire.

I think Duane changed after the campfire when after a couple days of missing he came back to school. I think he changed by his personality because when he came back to school he was dressed nicely and had a great attitude towards his peers on page 191,"Duane Scrod Jr. stood motionless in the driveway, his back to the house. He appeared to be watching the sun go down. "Hi Smoke. What's up? " said Nick When the kid turned around, Nick saw that he was still wearing his Truman School blazer and necktie. I am proud to read that Duane went back to school so he can learn what he needs to in order to have an excellent future. I do think that in this book Duane will have to pay for his actions, meaning going to jail then after he gets out he will change. To add on, as far as now Duane Scrod Jr. is changing my working harder on not getting so angry towards others. He is also changing by learning how to solve solutions without getting mad. While talking about changing Duane is changing be able to have a cal conversation with the principal. Duane ha definitely changed especially with his kind words and compliments.

  7. While reading "Hoot" the character has changed a lot by saying " Roy reached into his backpack and whipped out his mother's camera "I've got proof!"he shouted. "Right here" on page 264. I think that at the begging he was kind of a shy boy and didn't like bringing up conversations. But now he's yelling out things that he hopes are true but might not be. Roy is growing as a person well because he knows right from wrong and that he good for when you become a grown up. Roy changes his mind a lot like on pg 130 " They slithered out to begin their deadly hunt." I'll be ready for em" or maybe not I don't know." I think that when he changes his mind it is a good thing because then he knows what is right and he changes the way he does things.

    1. Salma I do agree with you on this comment. Roy has been growing as to not being as shy and can admit things that aren't true. But, one thing is Roy "on page 123-124" got a surprise that he just thought was the most amazing thing on this planet,"Roy followed Mullet fingers back of the bulldozer and showed him what seems to be the smallest owls in the world." From that point on Roy loved animals, maybe even before that too.

    2. Salma on page 130 it was not Roy and Curly that began the deadly hunt. It was the snakes. "Curly was afraid that the moccasins were lurking nearby in some subterranean den, waiting for darkness before they slithered out to begin their deadly hunt." This is on page 130 paragraph 5. Salma I think that you thought the wrong thing on this page.

  8. Well I find their to be two main characters also I don’t see tons of change because I'm not or I don’t actually practice this often or do this often but I think that Mickey Cray is changing. I think so because well in the beginning he was horrible with the headaches. In the beginning Mickey Cray had said “I’ll never be the same.” Then he started jumping on Derkes back trying to strangle him. Now he is more calm. Currently in the book he is driving a speed boat with a gun pointed to his ribs all calm but Mickey has a plan. So the person who is pointing the gun at Mickey is Tunas dad. What Mickey is doing is trying to trick Tunas dad. Tunas dad wants to follow Tuna in a speed boat but has lost them. Now it is rainy or foggy and Mickey is going the opposite way of Tuna. All though other than that I haven’t noticed much of a difference in the story. All though Mickey Cray has stopped saying negative things like I’ll never be the same. So he does say a little bit of diffrent things.

  9. I'm still in the beginning of the book " Chomp" by Carl Hiaasen. I think that the main character is Wahoo. Wahoo's dad "Micky named him after Wahoo McDaniel, a professional wrestler who'd once linebacker for the Dolphins. Micky's son often wished he'd been called Micky Jr.or Joe or even Rupert _ anything but Wahoo, which was a species of saltwater fish." On page 1. But Wahoo still loves his parents and like to have fun with them. Wahoo's dad has a lot of cool reptiles like Alligator, and a python and other reptiles. Wahoo likes to feed them and play with them but some of them are dangerous like the python. A python is a type of snake that could break your ribs. One times a lady knocked on the door her name was Raven Stark. She wanted a dangerous reptile for the show a actor does. The actor is called Derek. He fights dangerous animals and do adventures. Derek wanted their alligator, Alice. She was about twelve feet long but Micky does not like his animals traveling neither get wrestled. Micky needed money to pay the payments for the bank. That is where Wahoo tells his dad to let them use other dangerous reptiles and then they will get payed a lot of money. Wahoo changed for money, he is ready for anything. I'm not sure what is the main problem but I think that the problem is that Derek wants Alice the alligator but Micky does not want anybody to touch her.

    1. I like that you are saying that Wahoo is named after a professional wrestler that used to be a linebacker for the dolphins. Why does Mickey does not want Derek touch Alice? There is a quote that says this that has something to do with touching Alice, "You want Alice? Shoot the scene hear." What can Derek do to hurt Alice?

  10. Reading the book “Scat” I think that Nick is changing because when his dad is back from Iraq he changed and going to the circle Kay was a change. Nick learned that Duane could have set the fire when the deputies told him and he saw the belt on his “panther” and it was a human. I think that was Twilly with the belt. In the beginning Nick was scared of Mrs. Starch and now he is in her house. “Nick wasn't sure if sneaking into Mrs. Starch’s house was the bravest thing he’d ever done or the dumbest.”a quote from page 135, paragraph one, chapter eleven. Next they (Marta and Nick) will see smoke to solve the mystery. I wonder why Mrs. Starch keeps stuffed (real) animals in her house. I also wonder why smoke was running if he didn't set the fire.

    1. @ Kali, I think that Nick has changed because his dad was back from Iraq too, so I agree with you. I think that the quote that you put in your comment “Nick wasn't sure if sneaking into Mrs. Starch’s house was the bravest thing he’d ever done or the dumbest.” really does prove the point that Nick is changing.

  11. In the book Chomp, the fourth book of Carl Hiaasen, shows a lot of hidden details that shows hows each character behaves and does what they do it also tells about how and why they do things the way they do like Wahoo Cray has a lot of compassion about taking care of animals and preventing any harm against any animal in the Everglades. Each Character in the book Chomp change in both mentally and physically in their own way.In the book Chomp, Wahoo takes care of his animals and prevents a realty adventure show host named Derek Badger , from using any of his animals in a hurtful way like wrestling his alligator named Alice or roasting his snapping turtle .Wahoo and his dad makes decisions that are helpful to his family and animals without harming anybody or anything. This can be seen by what Wahoo and his dad say in the story like when Derek said " I'm going to swim in a river with the alligator" Wahoo and his dad disaproved it and Derek was trying to find a way to use an animal in a dangerous and daring way that will give him more views on his TV show .As the story goes on the characters begin to change their minds about things like Raven Stark,Derek's production assistant , Feels a bit iffy about doing an episode of Expedition Survival! in the Everglades with animals who's owners respect and love their animals. All these things come into shape in The book of Chomp along with the solutions to certain problems to the story.

    1. I like that you say Chomp has hidden details. Where does Chomp has hidden details? Why is Derek wrestling with Mickey's alligator Alice? There is a quote in the book that says how Derek got on Alice "Somehow he wound up straddling her back, like a tipsy cowboy on a bronco."

    2. Eddie,
I like your thinking it is so good. I liked how you were being so descriptive with what was happening in the book. Do you think that the author is funny or has funny parts in the book? I think he does because in the 12th chapter on page 121, it says "The disappointing python scene was a prime example---Cray's lazy snake was about as fierce as a garden hose."

  12. In my new book Chomp I think that Mickey Cray is the main character because when I started the book it was talking all about him and because he is in every situation. I know that Mickey did change a little bit but then he went back to himself. In the book Chomp, a character named Mickey Cray was hit by a dead iguana and is not able to work which means he has to have his son Wahoo McDaniel take care of his animals. Mickey and Wahoo get calls everyday about job offers and they have to turn it down, until one day, they get a job offer that they would have to take because they are broke and need money. They really took the job offer because they get 1 thousand dollars a day plus all of the extra money for the borrowing of the animals.
I think that they are learning that it really was not a good idea to sign a contract to use the animals because the guy who they are working for want to take the animals and wrestle them and how he is going to do it will hurt the animals.
I think that the only thing they are changing their minds about is signing that contract and taking the job because on page 27 in chapter 3 paragraphs 9 through the rest of the page says
“Wahoo waited until his dad’s wounds were bandaged before telling him what Julie had said about the Expedition Survival! contract.
“I knew the guy was trouble,” Mickey muttered
“So what do we do now?”
“Our job, son. We do our job.” Mickey levered himself up, swinging his puffy, snake- bitten foot up on the coffee table. “I don’t care what they're stupid paperwork says----- I’m the only one in charge of my animals. Mr. Dork Badger can go fly a kite”
    “It’s Derek Badger””
Yes they are finding solutions to their problems by not letting Derek Badger take his animals out of their property. When they were shooting the scene for Expedition Survival!, the animals were not cooperating so Derek got really mad. The alligator, Alice started to come up from the bottom of the pool. Derek had started to stand on the alligator, but when he grabbed Alice, she turned around and attacked him! The camera had gotten all of it on tape and Derek said he wanted to delete it but once he watched it he loved it. Derek decided to start going all wild and not use tame animals so that is why I think that they solved their problems, because they will not be using Mickeys animals.

    1. I like that you are saying that Alice the alligator attacked him. I disagree with you because Alice didn't attack Derek she just wanted him to get off. There is a quote that says so "Alice was twirling violently when he splashed down for a landing." That is how alligators get a unwanted rider off their backs so Alice wanted Derek to get off but she didn't attack him.

    2. @Skyla In the book Scat the red diamond energy company set the fire and let Duane Jr. be the fall guy to solve the problem they made. They had evidence to help Duane's book bag. " It was right there on the front seat next to him: a camo-patterned book bag.
      A kid's book bag.
Jimmy lee bayliss thought: this is too good to be true", Page 185 Paragraph 2-4

    3. Kali,
I loved the book Scat alot because it is just a mystery through the whole thing and I love mysteries alot. I loved hoot to because I loved how mullet fingers was trying to save the owls, and risk his life for them which I do not think anyone could do at all. I liked flush because Noah was trying to prove that his dad did not go to jail for nothing, that Dusty Mulleman was really putting poop in the water and that Paine was not lying. I liked Chomp, because the star of Expedition Survival turned up missing because he sneaked away because he thought he was turning into a bat after the bat bit his tongue. In Hoot, It says on the back, "Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy's trail. The chase will introduce him to some other intriguing Floridian creatures: potty-trained alligators, a sinister pancake PR man, some burrowing owls, a fake-fart champion, a renegade eco-avenger, and several poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails.
Life in Florida is looking up."
I like how Carl is very descriptive.

  13. In the book "Hoot" Roy Eberhardt is just a normal school kid who does everything any other school kid does except for being a vandal trying to save owls that live in a future pancake house site but instead of the foreman trying to do anything to relocate them to a better house he is just leaving them there to be buried under millions of pounds of dug up earth. In the book they have a quote that proves that Curly the foreman does not care anything about the natural wildlife. This is the quote: "What’s going to happen to those owls?" Asked officer Delinko. "Once you start bulldozing I mean." And then curly said "What owls? Roy the main character is changing in the way he thinks about animals but not the way he thinks about Dana Matherson. He has started to care a lot more about animals and a little less about the law. He has actually started to enter the pancake house construction site and make it harder for them to actually build the house because Roy and Mullet Fingers keep taking the survey stakes out and covering up the holes with more dirt. Roy is growing as a person because he starts out just caring about himself and not the world around him and how it is progressing. Roy started by just doing his school work and going and being where he needs to be but after a little while he decides to start being where he doesn't need to be and not just where he does need to be. I think as the book progresses Roy has started to find different solutions to the different problems at school and at home. Like in one part of the book Roy tricked Dana Matherson into going to the construction site and making him be the distraction for Mullet fingers to pull all the survey stakes out and put dirt where they were supposed to be.

    2. I would this is a little weird but, it seems to be that both of our comment are close to the same in the beginning. But, by the way Can you include where you found some of this information? Like "On page 123-124 Roy was getting told about the owls then he noticed that he doesn't care about the law now he started caring more about animals in general." This information is really in the book.

    3. Blaise I am very impressed with Carl Hiaasen I mean rarely will you ever find a book that is brilliant like this. At least for me. As most people know that I only like darkness. evil, corrupted things and just about any other word that can describe darkness. But Carl Hiaasen is doing something odd. Something that most authors couldn't do or atleast that I know of. Could it be that it doesn't matter on the story or you could say the genre. It is just the author himself. Just think about this anyone who reads this does the genre matter or the story. Maybe it is the author. On the back of the book it says"Humorous adventure tales just don't get any more wacked... or fun to read than this" So the only word I liked in that was wacked. So how does this get me so into the book. I mean the vampire thing in the book was something alright. But I just can't describe. So tell me Blaise what do you think Carl Hiaasen did.

  14. Roy Eberhardt is just a normal kid in “Hoot.” His family lives all over and he lives in Florida. When he does something like trying to leave the school bus or just help someone out it all crumples down so fast. The one thing that has happened to Roy is he has turned into a animal finder. Roy has ran into lots of animals on this chase, weird animals too. I think that this animal thing has got into his head a little more and he enjoys being with animals. I think at the end of this book that Roy is going to learn to love and grow into an animal lover. On page 124 Roy and mullet fingers looked into the hole that mullet fingers made for these owls but, Roy didn’t know it was owls before,”there standing by the hoe and peering curiously at one of the meatballs, was the smallest owl the he had ever seen.” Now Roy gets what mullet fingers was talking about.

    1. @Raphael I agree with you about how Roy finally gets what Mullet fingers was talking about because I understand that he didn't know what was going on when the snakes with the silver tails came along and just magically appeared on the mother paula's all american pancake house construction cite. So when they go to the construction Beatrice takes out the hamburger meat that they brought from Roy's house and gives it to the running boy which then climbs over the fence makes little meatballs and puts two by each of the owl holes. I think that you should have included that when you told us that Roy finally found out what the big secret was which is why Mullet fingers kept on pulling up the stakes in the ground and putting dangerous animals on the construction cite.

  15. Well the Main character I think is Nick so I am going to right about him because the author has written more about him passing chapter 8 into chapter 10.So Nick is changing because he is sick he is in a hospital his mom is with me I still remeber I read in ch. 9 that his mom said she was going to watch tv until he fell asleep but Nick never did from what I read because it said his body was exhausted but his brain was working with lots of energy or something like that.Well Nick is growing as a person because he doesn't get treated like a baby when he gets hurt when he is in that hospital he is not crying for anything he stands up to be a man and acts like one.Well Nick is changing his mind by changing what he thinks about like what happened to his father, he can’t sleep while thinking about his father that he might die would you sleep I wouldn't.I think they are because they are figuring out what happened to their teacher after she disappeared and about that kid that was weird and then all of the sudden the next day he is just a normal kid.Their answers are not that good but they get closer and closer to their problems after they keep on trying. From what I read yes Nick and Marta got different ideas because she thinks that Mrs. Starch is a witch because Smoke and her dropped out of sight and then she put a spell on him.But Nick thinks that is a guess because he doesn't believe in witches wizards or in Harry Potter not like her.

  17. In the book "HOOT" I think that there are two main characters because the book is basically always in there perspective. One of the main characters is the running boy. I think this because something really bad happens to him: He goes to the hospital. He doesn't want to go to the hospital because he doesn't want to give away his real name because he does not want his mother to send him back to boarding school (again). So he takes Roy's name which is another main character in the book. I think that he is also one of the main characters because in the beginning it starts out with him and Dana Matherson(which is a bully to mostly all kids in younger grades than him). When Roy and the running boy finally meet here is there conversation:
"Take deep breath" Advised the voice behind him.
    "I'm trying" Roy said.
"Okay, now step backwards real slow on the count of three".
    "One...".
    "Now wait a second".
    "Two...".
    "Please" Roy said.
    "Three".
    "I can't!".
"Three" The voice said again. Roy hesitated to scoot back, but he finally managed to do it. Then they talked a bit more. "Don't turn around until you count to fifty" The kid instructed him. "Otherwise, you're gonna wake up one morning with one of those big ole cottonmouths in your bed. Got it?"
    Roy nodded.
    "Good. Now start countin'."
"One, two, three, four..." Roy said aloud. When he got to fifty he whipped the hood off his head and wheeled around. He was alone in the middle of the driving range, surrounded by acres of golf balls.

  18. In the book "Hoot", Roy (the main character) saw a kid running down the street out of his window. If it weren't for cigarette smoking, school bully Dana smearing Roy's face against the window like butter, Roy wouldn't have seen the boy. "Dana's breath smelled like stale cigarettes. Smoking and beating up smaller kids were his two main hobbies."

Next in the book we go to a police officer named David Delinko. He went to a construction sight of a Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House. A complaint was reported by a man who was working there. His name was Curly. He was checking the sight out when he tripped and almost fell. He tripped because he stepped in an owl hole. Yeah, yeah, I know it sounds weird but there actually owls that burrow in the ground. Look it up on Google sometime. Officer Delinko asked how big the owls were. "'Bout as tall as a beer can." Curly replied.
When Roy finally got Dana to lay off, he looked out the window to try to see the boy again. But the boy was gone, and that was that.

  19. As I read more in the book, I see how Roy the main character is changing by doing things that were really wild. Roy and his dad were going to Yellowstone National park. As they were going there they saw a sign that said,"WARNING! Many visitors have been gored by buffalo. These animals may appear tame but are wild, unpredictable, and dangerous. DO NOT APPROACH BUFFALO!" That was all that it said. I keep on reading and the character Roy is learning that he should not fight every single time with Dana. In the book their is even a note. Here is what it said " Dear Dana,
I'm sorry I busted your nose. I hope the bleeding stooped. I promise not to hit you ever again as long as you don't bother me on the school bus. I think that's a fair arrangement. Most sincerely, Roy A. Eberhardt." Roy is also changing his mind. He is thinking of doing something for the owls in the pancake house they are going to make. Then this is what they said" What's going to happen to those owls?" Asked Officer Delinko. "Once you start bulldozing I mean" When that was over curly said, "What owls?". Really the main character is chaining by caring more for the owls. The main character Roy is also finding out what to do. They are doing something that is a little dumb, but they are doing this for good. Roy does not want the owls to be gone, so what they are going to do is that they are going to do is stand in front of the bulldozer. I think that this is strange, but they are not going to be able to go over that surface of the owls. The people in this book are actually doing things that are different. The characters are doing things different now, because first it was all a fight and now it is all about caring about the owls. They are thinking of what to do, so that they can save the owls before they are gone forever. In the end, the owls are save and Roy and every body else got the owls safe.

  20. Noah from the looks of in the book is a kid who likes to sneak out of the house when his parents are gone. This type of child reminds me of a team of kids in a book series in which started with Swindle. The main character, griffin. I would say Noah is not your type of child that you expect to stay home when your out and about. Why? Because he knows how to drive a boat and dive off a three story boat casino! Yeah a boat casino. I don't think that Noah is thinking different things because the plan hasn't changed except for the part that they changed the detergent to food coloring.

  21. I am reading the book "Scat" and I don't think that there has really been much change in Nick. I think that there has been a change in Duane though. In the beginning, Duane was a troublemaker and he had ad grades, but later in the book he got good grades and didn't cause trouble in school. For example, on page 4 paragraph 9, it says, "' So, Duane,' Mrs. Starch said sweetly. 'Have you finished chapter 8?' Rumpled and sleepy-looking, Smoke grunted and raised his eyes toward the teacher. Nick couldn't see his expression, but the slump of his shoulders suggested a profound lack of interest." I think this shows that Duane is a troublemaker and doesn't enjoy school very much. On page 355 paragraph 7, it says "He looked up at her. 'But it says here I got an A-minus.'" I think that this shows that Duane now is better with his grades and he has become less of a troublemaker.

  22. Dear readers, in the book “Chomp” the main character Wahoo has changed a little bit throughout the story Wahoo has changed because now he is having a lot of trouble with his dad he getting bad in some days and sometimes he has been good in some days but maybe Wahoo has been thinking that he would like to be with his mom again, but his mom is of course in China. There is a quote that says all this in page 74 Wahoo says “Hows China” Wahoo’s mom says “I'm homesick, big guy. Is your dad feeling ok? Tell me the truth.” Wahoo says “Some days are better than others.” Wahoo and Mickey are growing through the days because I see that Wahoo is learning from his dad and Wahoo is also learning from Derek and from Raven. Mickey is growing and learning just a little bit because I see that Mickey doesn’t talk about Susan Cray very much now he is just thinking what he needs to be doing. I don’t really see any of these main characters changing their minds about anything. I also don’t really see any solutions to any of these problems they’re having and they also don’t really have any solutions. I see them only saying different things like Mickey is not talking about Susan very much. Maybe I will find more of these solutions throughout this story and maybe they will have different and hard problems.
