Key Time Author Study: Carl Hiaasen

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today you will begin an Author Study. The author we will be reading is Carl Hiaasen. We will be reading three of his books: Hoot, Flush, and Scat. Each book has a bit of an environmental science twist. There's also a mystery coming your way in each book. There will be plenty of action and amazing characters. We know you're really going to love these books.

Today, after your previous key time blog post has been approved, you will be able to select a book to begin with. The book will be checked out to you, so please be careful with it. Some of the books had to be brought in from other school libraries. Thanks in advance for taking great care of the books.

As you will see, there are plenty of connections between the three books, and all of them are incredible. You simply cannot make a bad choice.

Your first assignment is to read chapters one and two in your book and then write a comment on this post.

In your comment, please answer the following questions:

1. Who is the main character? What are five great words that the author uses to describe the character or their actions? What do you think is important about this character so far?

2. Would you like to hang out with this character in real life for a day? Why or why not? Be specific.

After your comment has been accepted, please respond to at least two other students.

Don't choose your friends.

Think about what makes a great comment.

Push your thinking, Dragons!

Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde

  1. I think that the main character in hoot is either Roy or the running boy that Roy saw. They described the kid as small and scrawny with blonde hair and dirty feet. I think that I would hang out with Roy but not with the kid who is always running because I have a feeling that he is going to get into lots of trouble.

    1. I like that you described the boy Roy saw with those descriptive words. What about Roy what descriptions does he have? Why do you think that the main character is Roy or the boy running? Why is the boy Roy saw running scrawny and those other descriptive words?

    2. Hey Blaise! I think that Roy is the main character because he was the main person on the back description. I wouldn't hang out with Roy or the running boy because I think that they both get into trouble later in the book.

    3. Blaise, I totally agree with you that there are two main characters in the book "HOOT" because why would the author just start the book with these two kids. But there can also be three main characters. Roy, the running boy, and Dana Matherson. I think that there are three characters because Carl Hiassen started out with these three children. And I can't wait to read more of this book. Maybe the author started out with these three characters so he can trick us. What do you think Blaise?

    5. Sylas, I agree with you also because, why would the author have started this book with Dana Matherson, the running boy, and Roy? I like this book so far and I hope that you do to. If you could be one character in the book "HOOT"who would it be and why? So do you think that this is a good book? I like this book because like most books that I read: there are always a mystery. What types of books do you like? I think that "HOOT" is interesting I wish you could tell me more about what happens next time you make a comment. By the way I really like your thinking.

  4. Well my idea of the main character in hoot is pointed on just Roy because in the school bus he started off with Dana Matherson sneaking up on Roy and grabbed Roy's head put her thumb on his temple and mushed his face to the window and that was when he caught sight on the running boy with no shoes. What I think is Roy is the main character but, the running boy is going to be one of the big characters too.

  6. In my book the main character in Hoot is called Roy. The best way the author describes him is by this words, small, hopeful, fast, scrawny, and mysteries. I think that what is important about Roy, is that he doesn't want to get beat up, but he lets himself get beat up. I think that I would like to hang out with Roy, because he is mysteries and people that are mysteries are cool to me.

  7. The main character in the book Hoot is the running boy. The running boy is straw-blond and wiry, and his skin was nut-brown, he wore a faded Miami heat basketball jersey and dirty khaki shorts. I think that the running boy is important because Roy wants t know why the kid is running and he is the one that has no shoes or backpack and he passes the bus stops were kids go into there buses. Also I think that he is important because he is different from the other kids. I would not want to hang out with these character because he doesn't were shoes or has a backpack and I think that he doesn't have school because he has no backpack. I think that the running boy is going somewhere where nobody can see him or he just looking for something. Another thing that I would not hang out with the running boy because he might be a trouble maker or will get me into trouble. Some reasons I say this is because the running boy goes threw private yards.

    1. Good job Luis I think you did a great job explaining why you think the running boy is important. I also like how you pulled evidence from the text to explain how the running boy looked liked. In like the very first few pages it says that the running boy is straw blond and wiry, skin is nut brown, faded Miami heat basketball jersey and dirty khaki shorts. Also I think you kind of did great job of explanation why you wouldn't want to hang out with him. But also you should say is he scary to you mean or what is he?

  8. The main character is Noah because the book was following him the whole chapter 1 and 2. This describes Noah he is pitiful, honest, patient, good, and helpful. That is because when Noah's mom was talking he was listening so he is patient. The important thing about the character is that Noah's dad want to help him nail Mr. Muleman. That means to Noah and his dad to try to get somebody to see what the bad things Mr. Muleman was doing in the middle of the night. That is what the important thing the character is probably going to do later on in the book. I would help Noah with the the problem with Mr. Muleman for a day because when Mr. Muleman puts his sewage in the water it is bad for the environment and it makes a beach close because of the sewage in the water.

  9. I think that the main character in Hoot is Roy because he was being bullied in the beginning by Dana Matherson who snuck up and ambushed him she her thumb on his temple and when Roy tried to wriggle free she mushed Roy's head in to the window. Squeezing, Snuck, Ambushed, Wriggle, and Mushed are the five describing words that the author wrote. I think the importance of what the character did so far like he tried to wriggle free, is trying to get out of this situation. The person who I would be around more is the one that doesn't get in a lot of trouble like What Blaise said the running boy might get into a lot of trouble so, who I would hang by or be with is Roy because if I have a best friend and somebody near them is causing them trouble I would get in there and get him away.

  10. In the book that I am reading, "Scat" by Carl Hiaasen, the main character is Nick. Five great phrases that the author uses to describe Nick and his actions are 'Nick was fond of Marta' and Nick was still struggling' and 'his palms were sweating' and 'Nick felt his face reddening' and finally, 'Nick looked anxiously at...' I think that one of the things that is important about this character so far is that he likes Marta, but is scared of Mrs.Starch. I wouldn't really like to hang out with Nick for a day. For one, he get nervous about many things. Also, he would probably spend the entire time stammering, because he seems like someone who can never think of what to say at the right time.

  11. In the story Flush there was Noah, Abbeys brother. The author used the words to describe Noah were pitiful, smart, impressive, crazy and surprising. I think that so far the character is important because he was smart and clever when it came to getting rid of Jasper. I would not want to hang out with this character for a day because he is way older than me.

    1. I really liked your post. I agree with you on saying that he is smart and clever when it came to getting rid of Jasper. Like when it said on page 38 "Then I grabbed my fishing rod and took aim." Then a couple of sentences later it said "The hook on the jig snagged firmly in the mesh of Jasper Jr.'s ratty old basketball jersey, and he let out a howl." I don't disagree on anything in your post. You did great.

  12. Who is the main character? I think the main character is dad because in chapter one and two they talk about Noah and Dad getting revenge on Mule man. The Arthur gave five great words which are. Surprisingly which means in a good mood. Second, Decent looks good "Food looks Decent dad said."Third, Cheapskate "Dad said that Mule man was cheap as in "Cheapskate." Fourth, Pukey face "Abbey maid a face and said "Ugh." Last of all, Tendency dad gets to over exited so sometimes in a good mood. I think dad is important so far because he and Noah are making a plan to get pay back on Mule-man. So, Dad has to come up with a scam to get revenge. Would I like t hang out with Dad? NO because he was an Ax-Murder and that would be scary to hang out with him.

  13. Dear Mr. Moore and Ms. Vander Velde,
Based on what I read I think that the main character is Marta. The author described that she has brown eyes and a thin elbow. She was also described that she had a lot of nightmares about Mrs. Scratch. The author described that Nick is her friend. I'd like like to hang out one day with Marta because she is a cool person although she puked to times in class. I also want to hang out with her because she has good friends.

    1. Stella, I disagree with you the the main character in the book "Scat." I think that the main character is Nick. For one, you can tell what is going on in his house, but not Marta. Also, the book tells what Nick is thinking. Finally, you should try to include thee title of the book that you are reading in your post.

    2. I think that Marta is one of the main characters, but I think that Nick is more important than Marta. It says on page 4 "Great, Nick thought." It doesn't tell what Marta is thinking and the author is only telling what is going on in his house. In the book, you only read about Marta when she is with Nick.

  14. The main character in Flush is a kid named Noah that is 12 years old and his father is in jail. The author describes Noah as a smart and myistory solving kid, curious, strong, and calm. I think the important thing about this charicter so far is he wants to belive and complete a mistory. I would like to spend a day with this person because he seems like a good role model and sticks up for him self.

  15. I am reading this book called "Flush" and I think that it is a very great book. I think that the main character is Noah because he is not afriad of Jasper Jr. when he is being so rude to him. Noah want to help his father get out of jail because his mom might be leaving. Noah also believe in what he can do. He takes good of his sister Abbey and his dad the most. Sometimes he feels like he is in danger, but he will never leave without getting what he wants. Noah could be the one that could save his father from jail because his father does not want to come home for some reason. But NOah will help everyone in his family until they are safe. I would hang out with this character because he sound really cool in the book. But from what I have read about him I think he would be a good person to hang out with. In one part he said he really wanted to leave Lice peekings trailer, but he didn't. So that told me that he was not afraid of anything.

  16. Dear Scat buddies, in the book,"Scat " I believe the main character is Duane. I think Duane is the main character because he is the main person so far in the first two chapters causing trouble. Duane is causing trouble on page 10 paragraph 4,"Then he calmly chopped the pencil in half, chewed up the graphite along with the splinters, and swallowed the whole mouthful in a husky gulp. " Right there that is why I think Duane is the main character. Also a student named Nick described Duane as a student who grew five inches and gained thirty one pounds over the summer. All of this evidence is why I think the main character is Duane.

  17. This is the book "Hoot" and this is what happens in the book.Dana Matherson, it was him in which made Roy look out the window. He saw something smudge like in the window. It was a boy, a running boy. To Roy it looked like he was trying to catch the bus, but when the bus stopped at the corner of the street, he kept on running. Roy was curious about him, so curious that he kept on looking at him to see if maybe he forgot his backpack at home or maybe his homework. Then he noticed something strange, the boy wasn't wearing any shoes and he was running at an incredible pace. Roy wanted to hop out of the bus and follow him because when the boy jumped over that guard dog he ran into the bushes. In the book I think that the way that the author describes Roy is more of a curious and smart mixture. The way he describes the running boy is incredibly fast. Through out the book I know that I will change my mind many times so this is probably not the only way that the author describes the running boy and Roy.

  18. Mickey Cray and his Son Waahoo Cray are the main character. Wahoo is shy, not self- confident, named after a famous wrestler, not loud or crazy, not as smart and sociable as his sister. Wahoo is willing to help his family during bad or rough times. Yes because he has a lot of wild animals like snakes and crocodiles that he takes care of. I would love to study the way that the animals live and the way they work. Also I think that since Wahoo is willing to help his family I think that that will help in the future so that is major important. What I love about Carl Hiaasen book is that they always have animals involved like if they are endangered. I believe in Scat that a tiger or a puma or some kind of cat was endangered. In flush their is a pack of iguanas that died in a freeze and hit some adult named Mickey Cray on the head. Also even though the book isn’t evil or dark it still bring me in the story.

  20. I think that in the book "Flush" the main character is Noah. In the book it said that Noah didn't want to go into Lice's trailer but he did anyway. That tells me that Noah is a brave kid. He will also help his dad so that he can come home. I think that Noah is a little nosy too. He was spying on his mom who was talking to his Grandma Janet about getting a divorce. He also seems nice. He doesn't get mad when Jasper Jr. is beating him up. He just takes it and doesn't do anything about it. I think that Noah will do anything to get his dad out of jail. I think that the most important thing about Noah is that he will do anything to get his dad out of jail. I would want to hang out with Noah because he likes skateboards and I like skateboards. It says on page 1 "...and a roll of grip tape for my skateboard." That tells me that he rides a skateboard and he must like it.

  21. Dear to any body who is reading scat,
I learned that the main character so far is Duane. They call Duane the class comedian. They also call Duane DJ.Well it sounds like Duane is important so far because of what he has done like it a whole pencil by breaking it in half and gulping it down.I am going back in the book and I read a little bit more and know I think Duane is a big lier because he hasn’t told his dad what happened in the class.I think that Duane might get sick later on for eating that pencil. It said in the book this “Tell me exactly what happened” he said to Mrs. Starch. She held up the half eaten pencil “the young man has serious anger-control issues”.Know that show’s that Duane Jr is a trouble maker.I just can't Imagine how he swallowed that half of the pencil.

  22. Dear Readers, I read the first two chapters of the book called "Scat." So far I think that the main character is Mrs. Starch. I think that Mrs.Starch is the main character so far because in the first chapter in the first page it said, ..."for Mrs.Starch was the most feared teacher at the Truman School." The book also said that Mrs.Starch vanished. Mrs.Starch was described like a person that was nearly six feat tall, she unfolded stiffly like a crane, her ton was so mild it was chilling, she had blond hair, and she was the most feared teacher at her school. What I think is important about Mrs.Starch is that she vanished and that kids fear her. I would not like to spend a day in real life with Mrs.Starch because in the first chapter she was asking kids a lot of questions, she is to tall for me, and kids fear her.

  23. I am reading the book "Scat" and I think the main character is nick because the first chapter was more focused on Nick's thinking. For example, on page 4 paragraph 3, it says, "'I'm toast,' he thought. 'She's gonna crush me like a bug.'" the author says that Nick was still struggling with the Krebs cycle, and he is a friend of Marta. I think that the part that was most important about this character is that he cares for his friends and the rest of his classmates. Nick seems to have some courage and he seems nice. Nick seems like he would be a good leader. On page 4 paragraph 2, it says, "As the teacher pointed her pencil at the top of Marta's head, Nick raised his hand." I think this shows that Nick can be courageous and most people would like to hang out with that kind of person.

  24. Dear Mr.Moore and Mrs. Vander Velde and everyone one else who reads this post,
I'm now reading the book Scat, which I'm starting to love. In the first few chapters I have read I'm now thinking that the main character is a boy named Nick. Of course this book may talk about another boy named Duane, but most people call him Smoke. Like I was saying this book talks about Smoke a lot, but when this book talked about Smoke it mostly talked about how Smoke was effecting Nick. For example in this book it said "Nick tried to think of to say that would free Smoke from doing the essay and at the sometime not anger Mrs. Starch." This book had also "Mr, Waters, are you with us today?" in these parts, it was not in the book but just adding, Mrs. Starch asked Nick then after this Niki had replied "Yes, Mrs. Starch." Mrs. Starch had then said "Be honest---wouldn't you and your classmates enjoy hearing about Duane read his pimple paper?" These parts had lead me to believe that Nick is the main character in this book, so far.
During my reading I kept finding some great words that Carl Hiaasen put in about Nick. Carl used the word his face had redden after his friend Marta nudged him, I could kind of see what Nick looks like. Carl also used the phrase crack up because Nicks class did, but Nick did join in so I could see that happening and Carl said in his book Nicks chin had dropped down to his chest because the teacher had ask a question that might make him a mortal enemy or a teacher that wouldn't get off his back. I have also read that when Nick had got home he rushed into his room and went onto his computer to check his email. The last word I had found that was great was that Nick had trudged silently into class, I loved that because for one thing it was at the beginning of the book and that I could see what they everybody was doing and it told me what kinds of people they are in the biology class.
For the truth if I had a changes to hang out with Nick.....I wouldn't take it. I wouldn't take it because it just sounds like Nick sometimes makes friends with trouble makers and to me it also sounds like Nick try taking most of the damage to get his friends out of trouble. This may sound nice, but some of his friend just might deserve it...someday.
So far in this book I think that Nick is just being there. This may not sound important, but he tried getting his friend out of trouble he describes how Smoke acts and it also tells how Smoke is affecting anybody around him, so I just think this is a couple of things that he will do in this book.
Will thanks you Mrs.V and Mr. Moore for reading my post...........Oh yeah thank you anyone else who reads this post for just reading this post.

Not just because Mrs. Starch asked him a question it doesn't mean that Nick is the main character. I think that the book talked more and gave more information about Mrs.Starch and Duane. For example, in the book it said this about Mrs. Starch, "a day before Mrs.Starch vanished." So I think that Mrs.Starch is the main character because she vanished.

  27. I think that in the book "Scat" the main characters are Nick. The author described him and the the kids before they went on the field trip was groggy and rumpled. It said on page 24 "The students, groggy and rumpled, gathered shortly after dawn in the school parking lot." He also described Nick as toast because he was afraid that he was going to get called on. It also described Nick as tired. Like on page 24 Nick said "Just tired and all." I think that Nick is a nice kid too because he stuck up for Marta when he thought she was going to get called on, he rose his hand. I think that the most important thing about Nick is that he will stick up for Marta and that he is a good friend. I would hang out with Nick because he seems like a nice kid. I would want to hang out with a kid who is nice.

    1. . @ Peyton I was reading the book " Scat" before I started reading the book "Chomp". In the book “Chomp” there are two main characters and they are both boys One of thme is called Wahoo. Wahoo was named by his dad "Micky named him after Wahoo McDaniel, a professional wrestler who'd once linebacker for the Dolphins. Micky's son often wished he'd been called Micky Jr.or Joe or even Rupert _ anything but Wahoo, which was a species of saltwater fish." On page 1. Micky is Wahoo’s dad ."After school, Wahoo would feed the animals and clean out pens and cages. The backyard was literally a zoo _ gators, snakes, parrots, mynah birds, rats, mice, monkeys, raccoons, tortoises, and even a bald eagle, which Mickey had raised from fledgling after its mother was killed." On page 2. Micky and his son are helping a TV show that is called the Expedition Survival because Micky had experience with a lot of reptiles and animals.

  28. Dear readers,
In the book "Chomp by Carl Hiaasen," I think that Wahoo Cray is the main character so far in the two chapters. They say that Wahoo is a troublemaker, his favorite animal is an alligator named Alice. Wahoo is willing to help out his parents Mickey Cray and Mrs. Cray, Wahoo is a bet shy, Mickey Cray named his son Wahoo after a famous pro wrestler named Wahoo McDaniel, even he played for the Miami Dolphin page one. I think that Wahoo's major point of the book is when Wahoo is try to help out his parents get money. “ Wahoo told him the name of the Tv show. Not him! Mickey Cray snorted. I’ve heard stories about that jerk Well, how does a thousand bucks sound?”

  29. Dear readers, In the book “Chomp” I think that the main character is the dad named Mickey and the other main character is Mickey’s son, Wahoo. The five great words that the author uses is that in page 6 it says “Mickey got chomped all the time...” Also in page 8 it says “Wahoo let that sink in.” (which means another meaning) The third word that the author used for a great word is “Wahoo found his father in the backyard scanning in the trees.” The fourth great word in page 12 it says “Mickey raised up and said...” The last one in page 17 it says “Wahoo glanced at the massive snakes” The most important character in this book so far is Mickey because he already had a problem that his wife was going away and now Mickey has to take care of Wahoo. If I would hang out with these characters for a day I would probably say yes because I would most likely play with Wahoo if he did cool stuff and maybe playing video games and some sports.

    1. @ Angelo I think that the main problem is not that Micky's wife left and he had to take care of Wahoo by himself. I think that the main problem is that Derek a star in a TV show wants Micky to help him but Micky does not want to and he hates Derek he keeps calling him Mr.Beaver but Micky took the job because he needs money. Also if you had read farther did you hear about the girl named Tuna. It is the same thing as Wahoo. Wahoo is a name that "was a species of saltwater fish." On page 1. And tuna is a species of fish too.

Micky's son often wished he'd been called Micky Jr.or Joe or even Rupert _ anything but Wahoo, which was a species of saltwater fish." On page 1. " After school, Wahoo would feed the animals and clean out pens and cages. The backyard was literally a zoo _ gators, snakes, parrots, mynah birds, rats, mice, monkeys, raccoons, tortoises, and even a bald eagle, which Mickey had raised from fledgling after its mother was killed." On page 2. I’d like to hangout with Wahoo for one whole day because he is nice and I’d like to feed animals such as pythons, panther and alligators. I wonder how old Wahoo is ?

    1. Stella, I agree that it would be fun to hang out with Wahoo for a day. However, I think that Wahoo's dad, Micky is the main character.

    1. @ Peyton I really do agree with you on how you think that Nick is that main character he is. And that you like you hang out with people who are nice and are not mean that is good. Because I know how nice Nick is unlike Smoke.

  34. Dear readers

In the book "Flush" the main character is Noah. What I think is important about the character is that Noah still loves his dad even though his dad is in jail.Noah went to go visit his in jail on fathers day "Happy fathers day" says Noah "Thanks Noah" said his dad, all of this was on page 1 in the book. Noah is moving forward even if there is a situation with his family. Five great words that the author says to describe Noah's actions are that Noah still cares about his dad and that he tries to help his mom not think about his dad which is pretty nice. If I got the chance to hang out with Noah I would want to hang out with him because he is such a good kid and he cares about his family. Another reason why I would want to hang out with Noah is because he seem really cool. Noah seem like the kind of guy that just doesn't really like to argue about things.

  35. Dear readers,
I have recently been reading this book called "Hoot" and as I was reading I had to think about these questions Who is the main character? What are five great words that the author uses to describe the character in their action? What do you think is important about this character so far? I think the main character is is Roy in the book "Hoot" because basically in all the chapters it talks about him. On page 14 Dana the bully is choking him because Dana's mean or she wanted to just act cool. Here are some words the author used to describe Roy in his action while he was being choked. On pg 14 on "Hoot" Roy was squirming, he was furious, struggling, squeaked /screamed, and he was a blur. I also wouldn't want to hang out with Roy because on page 185 Roy lied and because he didn't want to get beat up and he said to Dana " Ciggies Dana questioned him and Roy said " I know were a whole case of cigarettes are." Dana wanted them so she promised not to beat up Roy. Roy told Dana to go and get them from a truck and she was trying to get them and it that situation Roy ditched him and Dana got caught with the police. The reason is because he got some one else in trouble huge and a huge problem.

  36. I am reading the book Chomp and I love the book so far it talks about animals, stars, and some people that just need jobs. Alice is the alligator that Mickey had since he was a teenager he caught her as a baby gator. Mickey is the dad of Wahoo and his mom is in China so that they could pay the mortgage on their house so that they don't get kicked out.
Because on pg. 56 at top of paragraph 5 it says "The falling droplets dimpled the brackish pool. Two fat bubbles appeared, and Alice rose slowly". I love the description that it uses and how it distracts us by the rain and then it says that Alice rose slowly. I think that the thing that is so important about the character is that Mickey cares about his animals and won't let anyone hurt her. That is a good thing when your dealing with a Derek Badger brat because he had a pocket knife that he kept saying was fake but Mickey cut himself and said "not so fake after huh".
I personal think that is I would get to spend a whole day with Mickey Cray that would be awesome because you know hanging out with animals is probably really really fun. I would like to have that experience with animals, monkeys, and alligators.

  38. I'm reading,"Flush " and while reading,"Flush" In this book there are so far four characters, Paine(The father of Noah and Abbey), Noah, Abbey, and Dusty Muleman, a boat man. So far in the book Noah and Abbey's father is jail because he sunk Dusty Mulemans gambling boat. Noah's dad sunk Dusty Mulemans boat because his dad assumed that the gambling boat is dumping out sewer water into the basin where turtles lay their eggs and kids swim. Now it is up to Noah and his sister to find out the truth for their dad. While reading this book I think that the main character is Paine because he is the one in jail and he is the one who is being helped to figure out the real truth. The characters kids says he is weird on page 27 paragraph 2 Noah says," Sometimes it's like my father lives on his own weird little planet." In my opinion I think I think the dad is weird, heard headed, crazy, and helpful because Paine sunk Dusty Mulemans party boat but I also think he is being helpful because he thinks the party boat is dumping non useful stuff in natures water. I do think that this character is hard-headed because his wife is offering to bail him out of jail but he refuses to let her bail him out he says," Because it's important for me to be here right now." Paine said that when Noah was telling him that his mother wanted to bail him out. I wouldn't want to be him at this moment in jail and in trouble with his wife.

  39. Dear Audience, I read the first two chapters of "Hoot." I think it is a great book. So far I think that the main character in the book is is the running boy because in the first two chapters it talks about the running boy. I also think that later in the book Roy is going to face the boy and start talking to him. Another reason why I think the running boy is the main character is because in the book it said, " no shoes, no backpack, no books-strange, indeed, on a school day." So this proves that the boy is not going to school. Carl Hiaasen described the running boy as a boy that had blond hair, had a Miami Heat jersey, was fast at running, had dirty khaki shorts, and that his bare feet were as black as barbecue coals. What I think is important about the running boy is that he was running at a incredible speed and that he was running and didn't stop. That seems kind of strange. I would not like to hang out with this running boy in real life because he had no shoes so it would be weird to hang out with him.

  40. I think nick is the main character in "Scat" because he gets the most thoughts. Nick is really nice and is described as brave and "Not all other kids shared his courtesy about the big cats...", (page 34 paragraph 1)likes panthers.

  41. In the book Hoot, I think that the main character is Roy or the running boy because he sees a boy that's running right past him. Here is a quote of how the boy was described " He wore a faded Miami Heat basketball jersey and dirty khaki shorts, no shoes. This quote came form Hoot on page 1. Five good words that the author used to describe the boy are straw-blond, wiry and his skin was nut-brown form the sun. I wouldn't hang out with the running boy or Roy because the running boy might get Roy into trouble if they become friends.
